Colour carries information.

Satellites detect light leaving the ocean. Algorithms use its colour to estimate chlorophyll-a near the surface, helping us explore the distribution of phytoplankton.

A green ocean is not automatically a healthy ocean.

Clouds, suspended sediment and observation geometry can influence what is retrieved. More chlorophyll can accompany productive waters, but it is not a direct measurement of oxygen production, biodiversity or durable carbon storage.

Open the layer, select a location and compare the same season in different years. Look for missing coverage. Treat a visual pattern as the start of a question, not the end of an analysis.
